INTERVIEW: Steve Erk’s Photography Speaks To Us

GIjoe 91 sig-X3

Say what you want about reddit, but look in the right places and you can meet some pretty interesting people. It was in /r/toys that the work of Steve Erk caught my attention. Erk takes old Star Wars and G.I. Joe toys and photographs them in somewhat everyday settings. He demonstrates skill in staging and lighting these scenes, resulting in humorous works of nerdy modern art that I’d proudly display on my wall.

We reached out to Erk via his website and asked him a few questions about his process.

The Cake is a Lie, but the Portal Board Game Isn’t

porta-board-game-2

Portal is a popular video game from Valve that is best known for mind-bending 3D physics puzzles and an astonishingly dark sense of humor. Exactly one of those things translates well to a tabletop environment, which is good news because someone has actually gone ahead and made that game.

The Portal board game – or more accurately, Portal: The Uncooperative Cake Acquisition Game – is a collaborative effort from Valve and Cryptozoic Entertainment. It recently made an appearance at Gen Con in Indianapolis and will soon be coming to store shelves when it debuts for $49.99 later in the fall.

So what should you expect from The Uncooperative Cake Acquisition Game?

Happy Pikachus Bother a Sleeping Snorlax in an Adorable New Game

pikachu-snorlax-game

You know how it is in the summer. It’s hot. The sun is shining. You go out to the hammock in the backyard with a cold drink, a tube of sunscreen, and a glossy magazine, and just when you’re about to lie down and take a nap, a dozen Pikachus come out of nowhere and knock you right out of the hammock.

Like I said, you know how it is in summer.

game-of-thrones-risk

Think you’re a better strategist than Tywin Lannister (or at least Robb Stark)? Here’s your chance to prove your mettle.

In what can only be described as the most inevitable crossover of all time, HBO has announced that the Risk: Game of Thrones Edition will hit store shelves in August, combining the classic board game about backstabbing and military power with the beloved George R.R. Martin series about backstabbing and military power. The new set includes more than 650 pieces, seven armies, and two game boards, as well as 28 unique character cards with four representatives from each army.

Nerdy Bytes: NECA Releasing Leatherface Figure Based on Atari Game

Action figure heavy-hitter NECA has unveiled a Leatherface figure based on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre video game released by Atari back in 1982. The game wasn’t very concerned with detailed appearances, resulting in Leatherface’s green or blue body and tan blockhead that didn’t resemble the classic character.

This color scheme is presented lovingly in this figure, with his chainsaw being like a green extension of his body, although the character is admittedly far less pixelated than his video game counterpart. The 7” figure will be released with a distressed, vintage-looking box that features a picture of an original poster for the 1974 horror movie.

Pre-orders are available at BigBadToyStore .

Prepare to Battle Dr. Wily with Official Mega Man Replica Helmet

Megaman-helmet

Capcom has rolled out a list of new merchandise that will be available at this weekend’s San Diego Comic Con, and while a lot of the offerings are pretty standard – Ryu figurines, Mad Catz arcade sticks and whatnot – one item quite literally sits at the head of the pack. Due to overwhelming popular demand, Capcom is finally rolling out an official Mega Man replica helmet, and it looks just as cool as you always hoped it would when you were seven.

The helmet is made out of high polish ABS plastic with a padded interior and has working LED lights to give the wearer that authentic Mega Man glow. More importantly, it’s also made with a clamshell hinge that allows you to comfortably take the helmet on and off without damaging the plastic or your skull. (I would imagine that was the major design flaw that derailed earlier versions of the helm.) It’s the perfect accessory for your favorite childhood Halloween costume, arriving twenty-five years after it would have been most vital to that purpose.

Me personally? I collect Dragon Ball Z/GT action figures. Well I used to at least. What you see you in the above picture is what remains of my once glorious collection.

Read on as I interview myself about my collection.
