If you grew up in arcades and cut your teeth on some of the most fiendishly difficult space shooter games of the 1980s, you’re in for a treat. This week, 17-Bit released their much-anticipated open world (or open galaxy), procedurally-generated homage to arcade shooters of the 80s: GALAK-Z.

If the visuals don’t immediately draw you in due to their channeling of that decade’s best science fiction anime series, you might want to forfeit your nerd cred membership card. However, beyond this visual pastiche there’s a lot going on below the surface.

GALAK-Z celebrates the best of classic space shooters while bursting from the trappings of the genre, thanks to the benefit of its modern approach. R-Type will forever remain a classic, its eerie worlds easily memorable and memorizable. But every successful playthrough remains the same.

Thanks to its procedurally-generated scenarios, GALAK-Z presents players with something different each time. Additionally, the game’s enemies are smart thanks to the Cyntient AI system in place. And the soundtrack kicks total ass.

As if the game wasn’t retrotastic enough, it also includes a mech combat mode. If this were any more 80s, we’d be dancing the Running Man behind the couch.

Expect our review in a few days. In the meantime, we’re please to be sharing the love by giving away three copies of the game. See that widget to the right? That’s how you enter to win. Winners will be selected on August 15, 2015 at random. We only ask that you are at least 18 years of age and a resident of North America to enter. Good luck. You’ll need it to win, and you’ll need it to survive the challenging space combat of GALAK-Z!
