Rash from Battletoads joins Killer Instinct
Lots of great video games news is already coming out of Gamescom 2015, including the revelation that Rash from Battletoads is joining the fight in Killer Instinct! Yes, that announcement deserves an exclamation mark!
As many longtime game fans will know, Battletoads and Killer Instinct both initially came to us from developer Rare. So it makes sense that there would be a crossover between the two franchises. But what’s strange is that it has taken this long for it to happen.
This could be in part because the powers that be didn’t fully understand the lasting appeal of Battletoads, or because they felt the inclusion of an obviously wacky over-the-top character simply wouldn’t fit into an obviously wacky over-the-top fighting game.
That said, it is a good time to be a Battletoads fan. With this announcement and the fact that the Battletoads soundtrack is being pressed to vinyl (and is available for preorder here), we are one reboot away from total Battletoads bliss.
With the March 2016 launch of Killer Instinct Season 3, Rash will be a playable character. Those who have Killer Instinct and Rare Replay can battle it out as the Battletoad now, however, for a limited test period.
From the official news post:
Rash is available to all Killer Instinct and Rare Replay owners. If you’ve purchased any piece of Killer Instinct content, including Season bundles, characters, accessories, colours, or even KI Gold you have instant access to Rash. Rare Replay players – just launch the “Battletoads” game in Rare Replay to unlock the first achievement “Do You Have Battletoads?” Rash should now be available in the character select screen of Killer Instinct.
So, there you have it. Looks like I’m running to the game store after work to buy Rare Replay (which I had been putting off) just so I can see if he’s got what it takes to take down Fulgore. In the meantime, I’ve pre-ordered the vinyl soundtrack as well.
